Your Quick Energy Update:
The commodity cost of gas and electricity continues to fall. European gas storage remains above 75% full. This allied to strong supplies, mild temperatures, and good wind generation has meant global events such as the ongoing humanitarian crisis and related military activity in the Middle East haven’t significantly impacted this trend. However, we need to be mindful that unexpected events or escalation of military action may cause a sudden upward price movement.
While commodity costs fell by around 17% in the last few weeks recent contract rates are little changed. It can only be hoped that if supply factors remain stable contract rates will drop significantly in the coming weeks. While many customers can achieve gas rates of 5ppkW or less others are unfortunately still paying 7p. Similarly, electricity rates vary between 21 – 30ppkW. While the best unit rates are often accompanied by a larger standing charge (S/C) this does not explain the differential. Supplier choice and costs available to pubs are heavily determined by the specifics of each situation.
As prices have fallen some suppliers have reduced the standing charge rather than the rates. Clear evidence if it were needed that the S/C is not as Ofgem reflects in their recent consultation, “the fixed component of customers’ energy bills”.
While prices continue to drop, there is no certainty how much further they can fall. The commodity and non-commodity costs combined suggest that suppliers are maintaining a significant margin. Very few customers will be contemplating an increase of energy costs at renewal and many will see costs fall by 30% or more. Customers who are seeing significant cost reductions are advised not to wait until close to their contract end date in the hope of further savings in case a sudden market shock pushes prices higher.
Nationwide Energy’s field consultants and renewals advisors can provide energy advice, a market review, and updates on available prices. Introducing Jordan
“I was previously in a sales & customer service role. The skills I picked up in my previous job are effective communication both face-to-face and over the phone, a high level of patience and persistence, both of which allow me to get the job done to a high standard, and also the ability to multi-task. These particular skills have helped me in both day-to-day life and within the work environment.
In my spare time, I watch a lot of football and enjoy traveling to different places around the world. Last November I visited New York, which has been a dream of mine for a long time. I plan to visit Australia next.
My time so far at Nationwide Energy Consultants has been full of challenges, laughs and hard work. Each day is a new challenge and a new opportunity to gain more knowledge. The team are really helpful and make each day enjoyable, whilst also knuckling down with work. I am excited for my future here at Nationwide Energy.”
