Energy Update
Energy Update — 20 November 2025
Strong LNG deliveries hold reserves stable and contract rates ease, while EDF, Pozitive, Smartest and Ruby continue to obstruct changes of tenancy.
Market Update
Despite below-average temperatures in the UK and northern Europe, energy supplies remain buoyant with strong LNG deliveries to the UK and Europe. Gas reserves remain stable at 62% for the UK and 81% in Europe. This reassuring position has allowed costs to continue to evidence a modest decline.

Business Energy Costs
The sample shows commodity costs declining slowly while contract offers flex within a moderate range. The sample range of contract rates included electricity at 20ppkW and gas at 3.9ppkW, which is surely a positive indicator of better prices, for some at least.
| Commodity Cost | Av Unit Rate | Av Standing/C | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electricity | 18/09/2025 | 7.9p | 24.9p | £1.25 |
| 13/10/2025 | 7.7p | 26p | £1.55 | |
| 20/11/2025 | 7.7p | 24.7p | £1.77 | |
| Gas | 18/09/2025 | 2.8p | 5.9p | £1.01 |
| 13/10/2025 | 2.7p | 5.5p | £1.38 | |
| 20/11/2025 | 2.6p | 5.9p | £1.10 |
As always, it’s crucial to properly compare quotes from different suppliers. Today’s 3.9p gas was accompanied by a £4.11 daily standing charge, while a 4.5p unit rate was accompanied by a £1.63 standing charge. Rather than allowing the lower unit rate or cheaper standing charge influence decision makers. At Nationwide Energy we will calculate the point at which the higher standing charge works out cheaper. On this occasion, 413kW’s per day or 151,900 annually represents the switching point.
Supplier Challenges
Regrettably, we can’t resolve problems suppliers present in two minutes with a calculator! EDF & Pozitive remain the most obstinate in demanding solicitors' letters. Recent experience is that they hold customers on deemed rates for months, demanding a solicitor's letter and then inexplicably process the change of tenancy (CoT), without it, having bled the customer dry on higher rates. In the interests of balance, Smartest and Ruby both are worthy of mention, given their efforts to delay CoT’s. Even Eon, in many ways a good supplier, regularly asks for further documents, such as proof of rent or a deposit or rent, when they already have a lease. A sign that they don’t really understand what they are trying to establish!
